Watch Herbie Hancock and his Trio perform at the 1987 Munich Summer Piano Festival.
Today, Herbie Hancock is fostering the next generation of great jazz musicians as the chairman of UCLA’s Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. In 1987, he was influencing jazz in a different way. In that year, he won the Oscar for Best Musical Score and set off on a string of European concerts with his world-famous trio.
This 1987 concert from Munich’s Summer Piano Festival is the epitome of cool. Herbie Hancock opens with a casual and hypnotic piano solo and is then joined by Buster Williams on bass, and Al Foster on drums. Together they play songs from Herbie’s 1966 album Maiden Voyage, one of Buster Williams’ original compositions, and round things off with a classic Cole Porter tune.
