Watch excerpts from the Nureyev Legend and Legacy Gala featuring the iconic solos of Nureyev’s career performed by today’s top dancers. Over the course of his career, Nureyev helped to change the perception of male dancers. His interpretations of works showed the world that male dancers can and should be in the spotlight alongside prima ballerinas. When given the opportunity to choreograph his own production of The Sleeping Beauty, Nureyev added an extra solo for the prince, in La Bayadere he infused the production with his signature step the double assembles (corkscrew turns in the air), in Giselle Nureyev proved that dancers are not just athletes but deep and dramatic actors, and he insisted that in pas de deux the male dancer be as featured as the female. Nureyev raised the bar for male dancers. In these gala excerpts, principal dancers from around the world share their interpretation of some of Nureyev’s most famous male variations.
